We are excited to announce that author, entrepreneur, and money-making expert Mike Michalowicz will be our headline speaker at JUNKCON™ ’22!

Before his 35th birthday, Mike launched three multimillion-dollar companies. He sold his first company to private equity and his second firm to a Fortune 500.  He is the author of multiple entrepreneurial books including Profit First, Clockwork, The Pumpkin Plan, Fix This Next, and Get Different. He is a former small business columnist for The Wall Street Journal and a business makeover specialist on MSNBC.

During JUNKCON™ ’22, Mike will share insights into his Profit First method, a game-changing solution on how to transform your business from a cash-eating monster to a money-making machine. JUNKCON™ attendees will get to learn directly from Mike, ask him questions, and receive a free copy of his book Profit First. Mike will sign copies of the book immediately following his keynote address. We talked to Mike ahead of his JUNKCON™ debut to get a feel for what attendees can expect.

Q: What can attendees expect to learn from you at JUNKCON™?

Mike: Attendees can expect to learn how to channel their normal entrepreneurial behaviors to drive profitability. Most teachings tell you to change what you do, approach things differently, and change who you are. That is very difficult. It is very hard for people to change. It is much easier for us to stay the same, but build a system that brings that same behavior to better results. Profit First is a behavioral management system – it’s really a cash flow management system – but based on behavioral management and behavioral channeling. My commitment is that if people employ the system and keep doing what they’ve always done, they will start driving profits 24 hours after the JUNKCON™ presentation.

Q: Who is the “Profit First” method for?

Mike: The Profit First method is for business owners that want to:

  1. Profit
  2. Never worry about taxes again (the biggest bill that business owners are the least prepared for)
  3. Take home compensation representative of the work that they do, so they are not short-changing themselves
  4. Operate a business within the appropriate expense ratios

As you employ Profit First, you’ll learn that it’s actually a growth system too. It is a model that facilitates faster growth. The more than 600,000 businesses that we have doing Profit First consistently outpace their contemporaries in growth. I will explain why that is at JUNKCON™ as well.

Q: What’s the biggest mistake you see business owners make?

Mike: The biggest mistake business owners make is believing that they need to grow to become profitable. They put every dollar into growth. They try to push for growth, hoping that one day a switch will happen and they will be profitable. They make profit an event, meaning an eventuality – one day they will get there. That’s the greatest mistake. Profit is not an event, profit is a habit.

Q: What’s your advice for getting a business through a recession?

Mike: My biggest tip for getting through a recession is to choose not to participate in a recession. That may sound odd, but if you are a small business making less than $25 million in revenue, you can choose to not participate in a recession.

One of the techniques is to do what is called an upstream look. If you are affected by a recession realize that all of your competition is affected too. Especially the big players. They are losing out too. This is an opportunity to “woo” over those clients to you, and start doing business with them.

You can also be more agile than the big businesses. You can adjust quicker and faster, and that is another opportunity to enhance yourself during a recession.

Lastly, you can put systems into place. Strong systems position you so that when the economy starts to recover and there is a natural increasing flow of demand, you can lap it up. While your competition, who hasn’t improved their systems, can’t take on that new business because it will overwhelm them. That’s the biggest opportunity. If you navigate a recession successfully, sustain growth, and build good systems, you can gobble up all the opportunities once the boom comes back.
