A junk removal truck carries on work during the winter months

By JRA Consultant Sam Schick

Are you ready for winter? That’s always the big question in the junk removal business around this time of year. Winter is perceived as the “slow season.” And it is true that you will have fewer junk removal jobs during January, February, and March. For 15 years, when I owned and operated my own junk removal business, Jan. 1 through March 15 were always what I would call an “off-peak” time. However, it’s important to never think of it as the “slow” time.

You’ve probably heard of the term, self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe it’s going to be, it will be. That’s what winter is like in the junk removal industry. It’s only as slow as you make it to be.

Instead of accepting winter as a slow time of year, embrace the extra time as an opportunity to ramp up your efforts for what tends to be a booming second quarter in the junk removal industry.

Here are three things you should be doing during the “off-peak” winter months to prepare for your spring boom:

Cultivate Your Team

People are an essential resource in junk removal. Use the extra time to find the right staff and train your people to be at optimal performance for when March 15 rolls around.

Get Your Trucks in Tip-Top Shape

Make sure to get your junk removal trucks serviced during the winter months before they begin the heavy hauling in spring.

Make People Aware of Your Business

Use these months to market heavily. Find out where your customers are and hit them really hard with both digital marketing and truck-based marketing efforts. This is a great way to seed the months and get ready for spring.

Don’t make it a slow winter. Make it a really progressive winter. Look at it as an opportunity to really grow your business.
